Die Luft an diesem Tag ist heiß, aber ein leichter Wind macht sie erträglich. Die Anhöhe und der umgebende Wald tragen ihren Anteil dazu bei. So still, wie es heute ist, war es sonst nicht. Und damit meine ich nicht das Klirren hunderter Scheiben der großzügigen Verglasung, die hier mutwillig zerbrochen wurden, sondern das Husten der Kranken, die hier auf Genesung hofften.
Das Sanatorium ist eine ehemalige Heilstätte für Lungenerkrankungen - genauer: Tuberkulose. In den Anfangsjahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts noch ein europaweites Problem, fand die TBC ihre Opfer in den Ballungszentren der Industrie. Das Sanatorium J.Lemaire war dazu gedacht, den Kranken dieser Region zur Heilung zu verhelfen. Nicht ohne Grund hat fast jeder Raum einen Balkon, gibt es Terrassen auf jeder Ebene - sogar auf dem Dach. Hier haben die Patienten gesessen, über den damals noch gepflegten Garten geblickt und gehofft. Nicht immer ging diese Hoffnung auf: Operationssaal und Labortisch im Untergeschoss künden vom Kampf um das Leben und dem Verlust desselbigen.
Seitdem sind viele Jahre vergangen, die Entwicklung von Antibiotika hat die TBC eingedämmt und viele ehemaligen Kliniken überflüssig gemacht, die in der Regel immer möglichst abseits der normalen Bebauung standen.

Das Sanatorium Joseph Lemaire steht nun schon seit 1987 leer - und diese Zeit sieht man ihm auch leider an. Die Verwüstungen durch Vandalismus sind beträchtlich und reichen von hunderten Graffittis bis zu den Spuren gelegter Brände. Daher verwundert es nicht, dass die Anlage nun wieder stärker kontrolliert wird.

Als Vorzeigemodell moderner Architektur für Krankenhäuser hat das Sanatorium im Jahr 1937 den Betrieb aufgenommen - damals entworfen von Maxime Brunfaut und konzipiert für 150 Patienten. Mit Beginn des zweiten Weltkriegs wurde die Bettenkapazität um mehr als die Hälfte aufgestockt. 1992 - 5 Jahre nach der Schließung - wurde das Gebäude als Denkmal eingestuft. Zwei Jahre später erfolgte der Verkauf an die Entwicklungsgesellschaft Herpain.

The air that day is hot, but a slight wind makes it bearable. The hill and the surrounding forest have contributed to this, because they cool down the local climate. So still like today it wasn't in former times. And by that I don't mean the distortion of hundreds of slices of the generous glazing, which were wilfully broken, but the cough of the sick, who hoped for recovery here.
"Joseph Lemaire" is a former sanatorium for lung diseases - precisely: tuberculosis. In the early years of the last century still a problem throughout Europe, the TBC found their victims in the metropolitan areas of the industry. The sanatorium J. Lemaire was designed to heal the sick persons of the surrounding region. Not without reason almost every room ownes a balcony, on every level are terraces - even on the roof. Here sat the patients looking to the trimmed garden and still hoping. Not always that hope was fullfilled: operating room and laboratory table in the basement tell about the fight and sometimes the loss of lives.
Many years have passed since then and the development of antibiotics diked the TBC. Many former clinics - usually build apart from normal buildings if possible - are needless now.

The sanatorium Joseph Lemaire is empty now since 1987 - and unfortunately this time can be seen. The devastation caused by vandalism are considerable, ranging from hundreds of graffiti up to the tracks of sparked off fires. Therefore it is not surprising that the plant become more controlled now.

As a showcase of modern architecture for hospitals the sanatorium started to operate in 1937 - it was designed by Maxime Brunfaut and made for 150 patients. With the start of the Second World War the bed capacity increased to more than the half of them. 1992 - 5 years after the closing - the building was classified as a monument. Two years later it was sold to the development company Herpain.
